The ancient tree was not towering or massively thick. It was only wide enough for two people to wrap their arms around. Its trunk rose straight and upright, without bend or twist. Rough, heavy bark in a deep brown covered it, and the surface was packed with dense natural markings, some deep, some shallow, all layered close together.
Those markings wound and crossed over one another in strange, countless shapes. Some tangled and twisted together like distorted human faces, each one trapped in struggle, each one crying out with pain and refusal. Others stretched long and far, like great rivers of time running across eternity, flowing without end.
Thread after thread of dim black light seeped faintly from beneath the bark’s markings. It was neither vicious nor baleful, yet it carried the heavy breath of ancient desolation, of ages settled layer upon layer.
The ancient tree’s branches were thick with leaves. Each leaf was a deep jade green, its texture warm and fine, as though it had been carefully carved by nature from flawless jade. The veins were clear, and the luster stayed restrained beneath the surface.
Under the warm sun, the leaves gave off layers of soft, gentle light. They were full of life, forming a sharp contrast with the trunk’s dark, old simplicity.
It was Elderheart Soulwood!
The core foundation among the Three Relics of Embodiment, the piece without which nothing could be completed, the final goal Jared had crossed the Wastelands for, risked the three trials for, and survived by the thinnest margin again and again to find, now stood right before him. It was close enough to touch!
Jared’s violet soul suddenly brightened by a faint degree.
The hope favonovel.com had forced down for so many days began to surge quietly upward. Thoughts of avenging blood debts, returning to the ancestral homeland, and seeing old companions again rushed into favonovel.com all at once. But favonovel.com forced the turbulence back down.
He still did not rush forward to seize it. Instead, favonovel.com remained where favonovel.com was and swept the surrounding woodland again, checking over and over for hidden guardian wraithbeasts, killing wards, or fatal illusion arrays.
He searched again and again. He sensed again and again. The result never changed-no danger, no killing intent, no guardian, no ward.
Across the entire woodland, there was only peace. Only age-worn simplicity. Only the Elderheart Soulwood standing there in silence, with nothing else beside it.
Aldric spoke again, his voice calm, yet carrying the certainty of someone who had already seen through the whole thing. “Stop looking. No matter how much you search, it will do you no good…”
“The Third Trial has no traps, no wards, no illusion arrays, and no guardian wraithbeasts. Every external killing move is absent. The trial has never been in any outside thing. It is only in your heart. It does not test how strong your battle power is. It does not test how sharp your strategy is. It does not test how fast your movement technique is. It tests only three things…”
“First, whether you dare to take this heaven-defying opportunity, and whether you dare to bear the endless cause and effect behind it… Second, whether you are willing to set down the obsessions in your heart, so your pure spirit can resonate with Soulwood’s nascence and merge with it… Third, after you take the Soulwood, whether you can withstand the backlash of countless failures’ obsessions, hold to what first drove you, keep your true heart unchanged, and not stray down the wrong path.”
Jared stayed silent for a long while. The shape of his spirit rose and dipped without settling, and thought after thought cut through him. He carried a blood debt as deep as a sea. He carried the lives owed to his own sect, the obsession of returning to the Sixteenth Firmament, and the mission of raising the Aureate Way again and continuing the First Patriarch’s inheritance.
His obsessions ran too deep. His burdens were too heavy. Love and hate were tangled together, debts and grudges clung to favonovel.com from every side. To reach a state with no stray thought, pure and flawless, was harder than any blade or formation before him.
But there was no other path left to him. For his body. For revenge. For every person who had already fallen. However hard it was, favonovel.com had to do it.
Jared hesitated no longer. He turned into the violet gleam and drifted forward, slow and light, until favonovel.com reached the trunk of the Elderheart Soulwood and stopped steadily before it.
He gathered himself and stilled everything else. His soul-force condensed into shape, becoming a half-transparent, illusory palm that reached out gently and pressed flat against the Elderheart Soulwood’s rough, cold trunk.
The first touch was cold, yet the grain beneath it felt smooth and warm, like age-old glacial jade. The texture was fine and unlike anything else, and a faint ancient spirit aura traveled slowly through his palm, calm and heavy, neither restless nor fierce.
Jared applied a little force, trying to pull the Elderheart Soulwood out by the roots and take it by strength. The trunk did not move at all. It stood firm as a mountain, rooted in the void, without shifting even a fraction.
He added three more measures of spirit force and drove his nascence force to its limit. It still did nothing. The ancient tree remained rooted where it was, as if it had fused with this world and this stretch of void, impossible to shake in the slightest.
Jared’s brow tightened. He felt something did not add up. “What is going on? Ordinary heartwood can be pulled free with a push of the spirit. This Soulwood looks unguarded, so why can’t brute force move it?”
Aldric gave a low, rough laugh and answered favonovel.com slowly, “You still do not understand… The Elderheart Soulwood is not ordinary grass or wood. It is not rooted in soil, not rooted in the mountain range, and not rooted in a spirit vein. It is rooted m the void-of-heavens nascence, rooted in the obsessions of countless ages, one with the world of the Elder Soulborn Forest, born from the same source and living with it…”
“If you try to pull it out with outside force, if you try to seize it by brute strength, then forget you, a wisp of remnant soul. Even if Golden Immortal Level Four or Five adepts came here in person, it still would not move an inch. If you want to take it, you do not rely on force, strength, or robbery. You rely only on resonance…”
“When the spirit and the Soulwood merge, when the true heart aligns with the ages, and when it recognizes your heart, your path, and your obsession, you will not need to lift a hand. It will detach itself and give itself to you. If it does not recognize you, then even if you turn over every mountain and forest and destroy the entire void, you will still end with nothing.”
The meaning snapped into place for Jared at once. He stopped clinging to brute force, withdrew the illusory palm, and slowly closed the eyes of his spirit, drawing in every edge and gathering away every stray thought.
He sank all of his spirit sense into the depths of the Elderheart Soulwood’s trunk. He shut out every disturbance from the outside, emptied his mind, and stripped away every restless surge.
He did not turn toward the raw pain of his destroyed body. He did not turn toward Freevale’s blood-soaked dead and the weight they had left behind. He did not turn toward the blood debt owed by the celestials, the killing plan that would follow once his body was rebuilt, or the dangerous road ahead with enemies waiting on every side.
Not one thought arose. Ten thousand thoughts fell silent. Only his true heart remained, quietly perceiving.
At first, when his spirit sense sank into the Soulwood, there was only boundless darkness. It was dead still, hollow, with nothing inside it. There was no ripple of aura, no echo of passing ages, no remnant obsession left behind. It was like falling into an endless void, so silent that the stillness pressed tight around the spirit.
Jared held himself there. He did not press ahead, did not rush, did not recoil, and did not lose his pace. He kept his mind still, sensed in silence, and stayed with it without leaving, without growing restless, without giving up.
No one could tell how long passed. It might have been the blink of an instant. It might have been ten thousand ages.
Deep within the boundless darkness, a weak point of light slowly came alive. It was as small as a bean, dim and frail, like the last flame of a candle in the wind, swaying on the edge of collapse, as if it would go out completely in the next second and vanish without a trace.
Jared’s mind stirred. He guided his spirit sense with extreme care, eased closer, and touched it gently, not daring to disturb it in the slightest.
Hum…
A low, ancient Dao tone, weathered by ages beyond counting, suddenly thundered through the depths of the consciousness field.
Jared could not tell where the sound had come from, or how many years it had been passed down. It seemed to have crossed endless ages and stepped over the far reaches of time and heaven, carrying a bleak weight without limit, all that could never be made whole, and obsessions that refused to die. echoed through Jared’s soul until his spirit trembled faintly, and waves rolled through his mind one after another.
The instant the Dao tone faded, a vast and boundless torrent of information came right behind it. It was tangled, endless, and crushing, like floodwater bursting through a broken dam. In a single breath, it poured into Jared’s mind and spirit sense, blotting out everything as it swept in.
Jared understood at once. Elderheart Soulwood’s nascence power had never been a Godric meant for slaughter. It had never been a cultivation law of the realm. It had never been some peerless spiritual power.
It was the soul-essence left behind by countless challengers across hundreds of thousands of years. It was the lifelong obsessions of countless seekers who had never reached the Dao they chased. It was all that countless dreamers still could not let go of when death took them!
Every strand of soul-essence hid a person’s entire life. Every remnant obsession had a stretch of love, loss, meeting, and separation carved into it.
