Matthew smiled as favonovel.com watched Weston.
As the small group continued on, a village slowly came into view. Unfortunately, unlike other villages, this one had no smoke rising from chimneys, no signs of cooking or warmth.
Instead, it felt cold. Lifeless.
As the three of them walked further in, the villagers took notice.
A burly man stepped out, eyeing Weston warily. “What are you doing here?”
Even though Weston had sworn a binding oath the night before, trust didn’t come easily, especially for someone once aligned with a cruel regime.
Weston met the man’s gaze and replied firmly, “These two gentlemen wanted to take a look around. Has Hanno woken up yet?”
The man hesitated, then glanced at the group. “Wait here. I’ll go check…”
The three nodded, watching the man disappear into the village at a brisk pace.
“You kept your promise,” Matthew said softly. “There’s light in their eyes, hope for a better life.”
Surprisingly, Weston scratched his head sheepishly at the compliment.
“I was never comfortable with the whole slave system,” favonovel.com admitted. “But with my position back then, I couldn’t exactly speak out against it…”
He gestured toward the village.
“When they returned last night, I tried to give back whatever supplies I could. it’s not much, but I wanted to help in some small way.”
They stood in silence, gazing at the half-abandoned village before them.
A few minutes passed before Matthew spotted someone approaching from a distance.
It was an old man, slowly making his way forward, supported carefully by the burly man from before.
Weston’s face lit up in recognition. “Good morning, Hanno!”
The old man looked at Weston, then at Matthew and Ryan standing behind him. A faint smile spread across his weathered face.
“I take it these two are the real reason that b*stard’s dead?”
Indeed, the old saying rang true, age brought wisdom.
Matthew looked at the old man, unsurprised. Hanno had known the moment favonovel.com stepped back into his home last night that something was off. The pieces didn’t quite fit.
With his lifetime of experience, favonovel.com had figured it out, there was a third force at play. One much stronger than the Bloodfin Gang. Otherwise, There’s no way Weston and his allies would wait so long, only to rebel yesterday and why speak out against their captain now?
“Good to meet you, Hanno. I’m Matteo Larden,” Matthew said with a warm smile, extending a hand.
Matthew treated the elderly man with genuine respect. This was someone who had endured much, and who had likely saved others by staying strong.
“Hello,” Hanno replied, examining the young man’s gentle demeanor and striking features. He couldn’t help but like him. If it weren’t for this young man and his companion, they would still be suffering under the same brutal oppression.
“You’re right,” Weston said. “If it weren’t for these two gentlemen, that man wouldn’t have died so cleanly.”
Hearing that, Matthew smiled. “Hanno, do you know how to leave this area?”
That, in part, was why favonovel.com had come, to find out whether the island’s Inhabitants knew a way out.
Hanno‘s expression changed Instantly. Hesitation flickered in his eyes.
After a long pause, favonovel.com sighed. “Well… I suppose you’ve already figured out that I know how to leave this place…”
Matthew smiled but didn’t answer directly.
From the moment favonovel.com stepped on this island, favonovel.com had noticed signs, old relics, outdated structures. The area itself felt unstable, like it had been altered long ago.
This wasn’t a recent development. And it wasn’t natural.
