One of the Lake family’s servants announced each of Kennedy’s birthday gifts and congratulatory messages given by Ocean City’s dignitaries. Although there was no mention of the value of these birthday gifts, everyone knew none of them were cheap.
The status and power of the Lake family and the guests of the 50th birthday banquet were obvious, so there were no inferior birthday gifts.
The birthday gifts represented the giver’s attitude toward the Lake family as well as their pride.

As the crowd discussed, a series of voices came from outside Lake Residence’s courtyard, shaking everyone’s eardrums.
